Lochar Thistle AFC

THE South of Scotland League has been boosted after member clubs voted last night to admit South Lanarkshire side East Kilbride and Dumfries amateur side Lochar Thistle.

The two new clubs will take part in next season’s league and league cup programme and bring the total number of league sides up to 14.

Lochar’s application to join the Southern Counties FA and the Wigtownshire Association was also approved at the annual general meeting held at Dalbeattie and they will take part in the other five cup competitions as well. They will play at the Maxwelltown high school in Dumfries they are currently carrying out ground improvements. They also have excellent changing facilities at the nearby school.

Only two clubs opposed East Kilbride’s application to join the league, Newton Stewart and Wigtown with all the other clubs giving their approval. The amateur side have around 28 teams, over 500 registered players, a state-of-the art 3G pitch and changing facilities and a 400-seater stand at their K Park Training Academy in Calderglen Country Park at East Kilbride.

Russell Caskie of Lochar said they had been going for 44 years and they now felt the time was right for progressing the future of the club. He added that last year they did not have the financial backing but they had now got everything in place.
